"PAPER SNOWBALLS"

MATERIALS: Sheets of white paper, marker

OBJECTIVE: Students throw paper "snowballs" and read the words written on them.

ACTIVITY: On each paper, write a spelling word or sight word in large letters. Crumple each paper into a ball and place them in a basket. Have the children sit in a circle on the floor. The first student chooses a "snowball" and throws it, underhanded, to a student across from him. That student catches the "snowball" and flattens out the paper to read the word. The student who threw the "snowball" must spell the word that he just heard. If he is able to spell the word, the other student is "hit" by the "snowball." If, however, he is unable to spell the word, the "snowball" has missed the student and he is safe. The winner gets to throw the next "snowball."

VARIATIONS: Print letters or numbers on the papers.

"LITTLE MARY HAD A NAME"

MATERIALS: None

OBJECTIVE: Students learn initial letter sounds singing a well-known song.

ACTIVITY: Sing the song  to the tune of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," substituting the names of the students and the sound of their first letter:

Little Mary Had a Name
m, m, m, m, m.
And in her name there was an "M"
m, m, m, m, m.
With a m, m here.
And a m, m there.
Here a m. There a m.
Everywhere a m, m.
Little Mary had a name,
m, m, m, m, m.

VARIATIONS: Try other songs: "Mary on the bus says m, m, m..." ("The Wheels on the Bus.")

"WORD MIX-UP"

MATERIALS: Index cards, marker, scissors

OBJECTIVE: Students put the letters of a known word in correct order.

ACTIVITY: Write a word on a large card. Show the word to the class. Cut apart the letters and have a student put the word back together! Great for sight words. Example: Write the word like.

VARIATIONS: Use the students' names or last names.

"SIMON SAYS"

MATERIALS: None

OBJECTIVE: Students must follow a series of directions given by the teacher.

ACTIVITY: Students stand in front of the teacher and are told that whenever the teacher begins a command with the phrase "Simon Says..." the students must do whatever she says. However, if the teacher does not begin by saying "Simon Says..." the students are to ignore the command and do nothing. Students are "out" and must sit down if they either obey a command that does not begin with "Simon Says..." or fail to follow a command that does begin with "Simon Says..." The winner is the last person standing.

Some simple commands may include: Raise your hand. Touch your nose. Stand on one leg. Flap your arms like a bird. Turn around. Say your name. Rub your tummy. Pat your head.

VARIATIONS: This is the perfect game to teach body parts, English as a second language or foreign language skills.

"TWENTY QUESTIONS"

MATERIALS: Chalkboard/dry erase board (optional)

OBJECTIVE: Students attempt to guess a hidden object by asking a series of yes/no questions.

ACTIVITY: The teacher explains that she is thinking of an object. This object can be something in the classroom, an object hidden in a box, or something general in the outside world. The students ask the teacher questions, trying to narrow down the identity of the object. However, the teacher can only answer "yes" or "no" to any questions and the students cannot guess the object until after all 20 questions have been asked. Typical questions can be: Is the object bigger than a basketball? Is it yellow? Does it smell? Is it heavy? Is it alive? The teacher can write each question on the board, followed by a "yes" or "no". Once all 20 questions have been asked, the students then are given 20 chances to guess the object based on the answers to the 20 questions. The winner is the one who correctly identifies the item.

VARIATION: This game can be changed to "Ten Questions" for younger students and the teacher may wish to give a hint: "This is something you can eat." "The object is something you can play with." "This is something you all have at home."

SUPER SILENT "E"

Look how a mild-mannered silent "e" can make the vowels say their name and change the word!

"REPEAT AFTER ME"

MATERIALS: None

OBJECTIVE: Students listen carefully to an ever-growing list which they have to then repeat.

ACTIVITY: The class is told to stand in a circle. The teacher explains that they will be playing a game in which they will be making a "chain of words." The first person will say the name of an animal. The next person will say that animal and add a new one. Each student must repeat all of the previously said animals, in order, and add a new one. If a student makes a mistake or can't remember the sequence, he/she is "out" and must sit down. The next student then must attempt to remember the sequence of words. The teacher should be keeping a written record of the order to check for accuracy. The game continues until only one student is left.

VARIATIONS: Instead of animals, you may use any other theme: states, countries, names of cars, numbers, etc. To increase the difficulty, you may also wish the students to invent a motion to go along with their word: Lion (touch your nose), Tiger (Rub your belly), Bear (Pull on ear), etc. In this way the students must remember the names of the animals, in order, along with their assigned motion! 

"SPELLING BEE"

MATERIALS: Chalkboard/dry erase board (optional)

OBJECTIVE: Students correctly spell a given word.

ACTIVITY: Students are told a word which they must spell correctly in order to advance to the next round. You may wish to have the students simply spell the words out loud in front of the class, or use the chalkboard and have them write the word for all to see. As the students advance to the next levels, the difficulty of the words should increase. Students who miss a word are not "out" of the game. Rather they simply remain on that same level and are given another word at that same level when they get their next turn. Instead of having students come to the front one by one, you may wish to have three or four students at the chalkboard to write the word. The first one with the correct spelling advances to the next round. This changes the game into a contest of speed as well as knowledge.

VARIATION: Even the smallest children can have Spelling Bees! In preschool they can spell their own name! They can even all have the same spelling word: Have them all take turns spelling  C-A-T. Or use just two or three words, put them in a box and draw out one! Each time the class plays the game, add one more new word.

"KIDS SEND E-MAIL!"

MATERIALS: Computer with internet connection, e-mail addresses of students' parents

OBJECTIVE: Students write a letter to their parents and send it to them via e-mail.

ACTIVITY: Even a 4-year-old can send e-mail! Even if it is simply their named typed over and over, parents will love getting e-mail from their son or daughter! I usually have one student per day work on writing a letter to their parents. Before it is sent, I proofread it and make sure it is legible. The students are told not to hit the send button- that is my job. In the beginning of the year the students can practice writing their name or certain spelling words. (Special stickers can be purchased that cover the keyboard keys with lower case letters if upper case is confusing them). As the students become independent writers, they create sentences and send them off to Mom and Dad. These sentences are usually along the lines of "The cat is red." or "I can see the dog." Later in the year they begin to write phonetic and invented spelling sentences to convey actual information: what they did at recess, what they painted this morning, the book they read, etc. The parents send back a response (sometimes the same day, sometimes the next) that I then read to the student. By doing this activity, students immediately understand the power of the printed word.

VARIATIONS: Have stock phrases written on cards by the computer for the students to copy: "Hi, Mom!" "What are you doing?" "I love you." etc. Have the students send e-mail to grandparents or other relatives across the country. I have one girl who sends e-mail to her father in the Navy who is stationed in a sub half way around the world!

"WHAT'S NEW?"

MATERIALS: Chalkboard/dry erase board

OBJECTIVE: Students must identify which letter or word has been changed on the board.

ACTIVITY: Write a simple sentence on the board: The cat is red. Tell the class to turn around. Erase the word "cat" and replace it with "dog" (The dog is red.). Tell the class to turn around and tell you "What's new?" Have them read the new sentence out loud. Tell them to turn around again. This time change "red" to "blue." (The dog is blue.) Continue with other words. (A dog is blue. The dog was blue. My cat is red. etc.) Have a student come to the board and act as the teacher and change the next word.

VARIATIONS: This game can be played with changing letters instead of words as well. Write "cat" on the board. Tell the class to turn around. Erase the "t" and replace it with "p" and have the class turn back around. Ask them "What's new?" and see if they can read the new word. Then turn "cap" into "cop" and "cop" into "top" etc.
